New in old. The Taiwanese Company, Asus, has also refreshed its netbook line-up and now offers the Eee PC 1215B. An AMD C-50 APU, including the dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics, a 2 GB DDR3 RAM and a 320 GB hard disk capacity in a familiar case awaits us. The Eee-deal solution for 349 euros RRP?Asus had only presented the new Eee PC netbooks with AMD hardware in passing at the Consumer Electronics Show 2011 CES. In addition to the small 1015B, a device with a inch screen 1366x768 pixels, glare type called Eee PC 1215B is available this year. Nothing has changed on the outsides and thus the well-familiar seashell case is still used. The interface array has also only been modified slightly, whereas now a USB is installed in addition to a HDMI out. A total of three models and four different color alternatives of the 1215B intended for the German and Austrian market are to attend to the largest possible group of buyers. It had been introduced at the beginning of April 2011 we reported. The Asus Eee PC 1215B-SIV006M that we are testing is the happy medium and includes AMD's C-50 APU with AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics, a 320 GB hard disk capacity, a 2 GB DDR3 RAM, a USB port and a Bluetooth +HS module. The netbook moves in the usual range at a recommended retail price of 399 euros including added value tax. Only a minor AMD update or a reasonable enhancement of the existing range?Asus' newest sprout doesn't have any surprises in terms of design. It is still the familiar seashell case as it had already been used in various other models. The plastic used everywhere and the matt silver finish makes a good impression. However, we adversely noticed sharp edges in single parts. The looks convince with a blend of plain parts in silver and elegant inserts of black high-gloss. The Eee PC is also available completely in black matt or glossy or in red with a textured surface, depending on your taste. However, this decision is a matter of personal preferences. The case's stability is impressive and even stronger pressure doesn't affect the base unit. Other netbooks could take an example on this. On the other hand, the display lid isn't as resistant and only slight pressure is enough to create visible waves. Then again, this unit's torsional stiffness and tightly pulled display hinges can be seen as positive. The latter offer a good hold in the desired position with slight teetering. Opening the lid with one hand is not possible due to the low weight of kilograms and rear positioned battery. Thus, the case has to be held down. The Eee PC's bottom proves to be fairly inaccessible. The RAM can be upgraded via a maintenance cover, whereas the maximum is 8 GB on two slots. The means of access to the memory medium is quite a bit more difficult and there is a sticker that warns you of a possible warranty loss. Basically, the hard disk construction height 9 millimeters could be replaced, but the numerous plastic clutches on the case can break off easily and the amount of required steps make it unnecessarily complicated. The usual interface array for a netbook is found on the sides. The pleasant distribution is also familiar. An agreeable feature is a fast USB port besides the HDMI out. This port isn't marked as such, though. Regarding the 1215B models, it becomes apparent that only our test device for 399 euros and the more expensive device with an E-350 APU for 449 euros RRP have this additional feature anyway. The webcam located above the display works with the basic megapixels and bids a still acceptable picture quality for video conferences via Skype. A small gimmick in this field is the privacy cover that can be pushed over the lens and thus provides impassable protection against impending spying Asus sticks to its line in regard to communication options and offers the latest standard. In addition to 10/100 MBit Ethernet Atheros AR8152 and WLAN standard data transmission via Bluetooth +HS is offered starting in the midrange model, which is here in the test. A UMTS model is currently not available and the required case opening also isn't equipped ex-factory. A simple and fairly inexpensive alternative is a fitting UMTS stick with a SIM card. Supplies The netbook's slim packaging already hints at the moderate scope of delivery. However, this is the case in most devices of this category. Besides the device, there is a 6 cell battery, a small power adapter with power cable and the usual documentation. Extras, such as a small bag or a mouse, aren't common for this price range and have to be purchased separately. On the other hand, the software configuration is a fortiori, even if not necessarily in a positive sense. Apart from Microsoft Office 2010 Starter and Adobe Reader, the vast amount of freeware programs and an anti-virus program's trial version are only superfluous ballast for the relatively weak configuration. Warranty In regard to warranty, the Eee PCs from Asus match the larger devices in every way. They are delivered with a 24 month warranty including pick-up & return service ex-factory. If desired, this service can be extended for an acceptable price of around 80 euros. However, Asus generally only grants a warranty for the first 12 months on the included see our test of the Asus Eee PC 1215N, respectively the Asus Eee PC 1215T netbook with equally constructed components for details about the keyboard unit and the glossinessThe Eee PC 1215B moves at the upper end of the netbook device category with a inch screen. Most users prefer the usually more fine-grained resolution besides the size. In this case, native 1366x768 pixels in a 169 format with a high-gloss display surface are given. Regarding the predecessors, it becomes apparent that Asus still uses the same screen from the Taiwanese manufacturer, HannStar model HSD121PHW1 and no improvements, such as a matt alternative, are supplied. External monitors with higher resolutions can also be connected thanks to a VGA and HDMI out. Both ports could provide a good transmission quality in 1920x1080 pixels Full HD, 1080p in a performance test. Small LEDs are still responsible for illuminating the entire surface. They also allow a slim build at the same time. Interestingly, our test device's maximum brightness of 203 cd/m2 is quite good. The comparable Eee PCs, 1215N and 1215T, clearly lag behind this to an extent. However, slight inaccuracies in measurement have to be considered and the question about the subjectively visible differences remains. A clear drawback is the observed brightness fluctuations which result in an illumination of only 82 percent and a visible clouding of the LED lighting. 178cd/m²187cd/m²173cd/m²190cd/m²186cd/m²175cd/m²203cd/m²180cd/m²167cd/m² Distribution of brightnessHannStar HSD121PHW1Gossen Mavo-MonitorMaximum 203 cd/m² Nits Average cd/m²Brightness Distribution 82 %Center on Battery 186 cd/m²Contrast 471 Black cd/m² AdobeRGB 1998 Argyll 3D sRGB Argyll 3D Display P3 Argyll 3DThe other display rates can't keep the average impression upright. The black value of cd/m2 is extremely high and the resulting contrast of 471 turns out low as expected. We can't determine if this unusual measurement is an outlier of our test sample or a problem of the range at the time of our review. The color reproduction and definition is subjectively acceptable, whereas the visible clouding has to be rated negatively. We also looked closer at the reproducible color spectrum to complement this point. The, for professional users, important sRGB reference color gamut isn't even close to being covered. This device isn't very suitable for professional use. It won't likely upset normal users as much as the image's contrast of all, outdoor use and the viewing angle stability can be summarized. The glossy surface and the average to poor brightness/contrast rates make outdoor use almost impossible. Working is only possible to an extent in a shady place. The viewing angles correspond with that of a low-cost TN screen and we notice fast inverting, respectively fading on the vertical plane. Rendering remains stable for the most part even in more narrow angles on the horizontal angles Asus Eee PC 1215B-SIV006M NetbookHWiNFO32 System overviewA fresh breeze from AMD blows inside the new Eee PC 1215B netbook edition. Both entry level models are equipped with the AMD C-50 Dual Core APU, which clocks with 1 GHz and has been codenamed Ontario. The 40 nanometer chip's power is distributed over two physical cores at a nominal power loss TDP of 9 watts. However, it doesn't include a virtual expansion Hyper Threading or automatic overclocking. An important key point of the accelerated processing unit is the incorporated AMD HD 6250 graphics unit with a core clock of 280 MHz and DirectX 11 support. This AMD solution is faster and, in particular, more modern in contrast to the incorporated GMA 3150 graphics in the Intel Atom N550. Even so, the actually weaker processor is of consequence. Asus however also offers the 1215B with the stronger AMD E-350 Zacate-APU for higher performance. This alternative works with GHz, two cores and an incorporated AMD Radeon HD 6310. Although this processor doesn't support virtual cores, the graphics unit is a bit superior thanks to a core clock of 500 MHz. Around 50 euros have to be paid for this upgrade, which includes a 4 GB DDR3 RAM and a 500 GB hard disk information Asus Eee PC 1215B-SIV006M Netbook The CPU benchmarks from Maxon start off our test course. The AMD C-50 APU achieves a result of 1405 points in Cinebench R10's multi-thread rendering 32bit and thus lags slightly behind Intel's Atom N550 dual core CPU. Seen in total, it is in the lower third of our database. An example with the Intel chip alternative would be the HP Mini 5103 with a result of 1457 points difference + percent. The AMD E-350 APU is available for a surcharge and a bit stronger with a core clock of GHz. The Acer Aspire 5253 achieves 1957 points in this test and has a lead of percent on the N550 and percent on the tested C-50 APU. Netbooks with an Intel Atom N550 fall through the cracks of the newer Cinebench because these configurations are only delivered with Windows 7 Starter 32bit. This benchmark is executed in 64bits. A difference of percent to points results in comparison with the Acer notebook with an E-350 APU in this test. All in all, a typically weak performance for a netbook, that is also noticed in routine use. Opening windows is quite slow and the charge times aren't impressive, either. Nevertheless, Intel practically moves on a par with its N550 CPU. But it is still no guaranty for a convincing 3D performance. The GPU achieves a result of 1399 points in 3DMark06 and clearly surpasses the Atom N550 with a GMA 3150 graphics. The Asus Eee PC 1015PEM, for example, only reaches weak 147 points in this benchmark. Thus, it lags behind by a whole percent. The Acer notebook with an AMD Radeon HD 6310 E-350 is faster with its core clock of 500 MHz and achieves 1987 points difference + percent. System Performance Furmark's system benchmarks bid a small performance verdict. The Eee PC 1215B achieves a total score of acceptable 1788 points in PCMark Vantage. However, it is also in the lower third of our database. The immediate AMD predecessor, Eee PC 1215T, is only a breadth away and even netbooks with Intel's Atom N550 are direct neighbors in comparison. The Samsung NF310, for example, reaches 1671 points, which results in a difference of only percent. The E-350 APU is faster as usual and the difference is percent with 2044 points Sony VAIO VPC-YB1S1E/S. The maximum read transfer rate of MB per second CrystalDiskMark and the access speed of the AS SSD benchmark confirm this statement. Replacing it with a stronger alternative in form of a hybrid drive or a SSD is possible with some effort. However, it's not recommendable for lay persons. Moreover, it has to be considered that SSDs with eSATA II connections aren't supported by this platform Intel SSD Serie 510, OCZ Vertex 3 and thus Intel's new SSD series 320 is sooner to be Noise A small case fan and the installed memory unit are responsible for the created noise level. The netbook stays in the background with a constant dBA in idle mode. However, the permanently running fan is clearly a point of criticism. Other systems prove that silent operation in office applications is possible. The installed hard disk doesn't show any irregularities with dBA. The operation in load surprised us at a later stage. The low level of constant dBA could be maintained even during demanding applications. The fan's revolution speed normally increases significantly during these measurements in most cases. Speakers The installed stereo loudspeakers' sound quality is rather modest, as expected. Only few netbooks can impress in this field. A good example would be the Toshiba NB550D also based on AMD with a inch screen and two speakers from Harman Kardon located in the solutions can be connected to the 1215B via the mm stereo jack or the HDMI socket for a better sound. In addition to various headphones, an AV receiver with HDMI connector worked flawlessly in the power consumption, a relatively small screen and a suitably sized battery are important points for impressive battery runtimes. The latter bids a capacity of 56 watt hours in 6 cells, whereas it is Asus' standard netbook battery. BatteryEater's Classic Test simulates the hardware load during maximum display brightness and enabled WLAN modules. A complete battery charge is drained after good 4 hours and 49 minutes in this scenario. BatteryEater's Reader's Test is the opposite measurement. Reading a text document is replicated in this case max. energy saving options. The assessment is finished after 11 hours and 49 minutes. In comparison, the Eee PC 1215B is in the upper third, whereas this device category also has room upwards. More often than not, both of these scenarios aren't true to life because only the mostly used short term extremes are shown. The practical measurement "surfing via WLAN" with a pleasant display brightness is usually the happy medium. The netbook delivers a convincing presentation with 7 hours and 26 minutes, which is nevertheless within the average range. Lastly, we also looked closer at the charging process from a capacity of 0 to 100 percent. Unfortunately, this process is rather long with 197 minutes 3 hours and 17 minutes.Battery Runtime Idle without WLAN, min brightness 11h 49min WiFi Surfing 7h 26min Load maximum brightness 4h 49min The system's consumption rates are logical and fit in the picture when looking back at the runtimes. Our test system even surpasses small netbooks with an Atom N550 with a maximum consumption of only watts in idle mode. However, the consumption during load is usually a bit higher at the peak with watts. Overall, there is no reason for complaint in view of the large 6 cell battery, Asus Eee PC 1215B, with the new AMD C-50 APU and incorporated AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics leaves us with mixed feelings, as already the direct predecessor did. The case is still very stylish and the stability as well as workmanship is good – although we find that it lacks a bit of attention to detail. The connectivity has also been modified and there is now a USB port installed. We believe there is need for improvement in the below average screen and the touchpad area with slightly stiff keys. In terms of performance, the Brazos platform C-50 is no longer new and, with exception of 3D performance, Intel's Atom N550 is still in the lead, even if insignificantly. The emissions and the battery runtimes subjectively make a good impression, whereas we have to complain about the permanently running fan as well as the stereo speakers. Basically, you get a modern typewriter with well-known strengths and weaknesses for 399 euros RRP, midrange model, which is available as the model Asus Eee PC 1215B, but also with an Intel Atom N550. How we test computers Tech Computing It may be a little expensive for a netbook, but the Asus Eee PC 1215N looks stylish and really delivers in terms of performance. Niall has been writing about technology for over 10 years, working for the UK's most prestigious newspapers, magazines and websites in the process. What he doesn't know about TVs and laptops isn't worth worrying about. It's a little known fact that if you stacked all the TVs and laptops he has ever reviewed on top of each other, the pile would reach all the way to the moon and back four times. If ever there was a product to blur the boundaries between a netbook and an ultra-portable, the Asus Eee PC 1215N is it. Priced at around £430, it packs in a much more powerful dual-core Atom processor than you'll find on most netbooks, and it also has Nvidia Ion graphics to speed up video decoding. But just how good is it?The Good Good screen;. Decent trackpad;. Fast performance for a netbook;. HD video playback. The Bad Spongy keyboard. The Bottom Line It may be a little expensive for a netbook, but the Asus Eee PC 1215N looks stylish and really delivers in terms of performance. Gloss and glamour Looks-wise, the 1215N is a much more upmarket proposition than most plasticky netbooks. For starters, the lid and wrist rest have a gorgeous brushed-aluminium finish, and the keyboard and screen surround are dressed in glossy black. The edges are nicely curved, too, and there's some beautiful detailing dotted about, including the chrome strips on either side of the trackpad that mark out its boundary. It's fairly light at and petite measuring 296 by 203 by 38mm, but despite this it also manages to feel quite robust. You certainly get the impression it will stand up to some abuse during life on the road. Since the 1215N is aimed primarily at consumers, Asus has gone with a glossy coating on its screen. This, combined with the display's LED backlighting, does help colours to really leap from the screen, but it's also a tad reflective, especially when you're using it indoors under bright overhead lighting. Nevertheless, the screen's resolution of 1366x768 pixels is good by netbook standards and provides just enough real estate to allow you to work on two documents side by side. On the right trackpad The keyboard isn't quite as impressive, however. It features isolated keys, which are actually quite large by netbook standards and have a decent amount of travel. The layout is excellent, too, but unfortunately the keyboard has a fair amount of flex, especially towards the centre, and this can be a little off-putting. When you're tapping away at a decent rate, you can actually feel the flex under your fingers. The trackpad, on the other hand, is first class. It sits flush with the wrist rest, with two thin chrome strips to mark out its edges. It's big and wide, and the smooth surface means your fingers glide effortlessly across it. The long, narrow trackpad button also ticks the boxes - it feels sturdy and responds with a satisfying click when pressed. The 1215N's trackpad is excellent, but its keyboard feels a little spongy. One area where the 1215N feels very much like a netbook is its connectivity. Along with the usual three USB ports which are actually USB 3 ports, there's just an Ethernet jack, VGA connector and HDMI port. Naturally, there's also Wi-Fi on board, and Asus has included Bluetooth support, too. Ultra-fast netbook or nifty ultra-portable? What really sets this netbook apart from its peers, however, is its powerful, dual-core, D525 Atom processor. Although Intel now has a dual-core processor designed for portable devices, the one used here is actually aimed at desktop machines and has speedier performance. Asus has also kitted the 1215N out with 2GB of RAM, when most netbooks are limited to just 1GB of memory. This has also forced it to run the Home Premium version of Windows 7, as OEMs aren't allows to use Windows 7 Starter on netbooks with more than 1GB of RAM. The upshot of all this is that the 1215N feels much speedier in use than other netbooks, even those such as the Acer D255 that use the new dual-core N550 processor. Applications are quicker to load, and when you have a few applications open at the same time, it doesn't make a fuss when you switch quickly between them. This extra performance was reflected in its PCMark05 results, where it scored 2,451, compared to the 1,634 racked up by the N550-equipped Samsung NF210. Rated Graphic The other big benefit of the 1215N is that it has discrete Nvidia Ion 2 graphics with Nvidia's Optimus technology, which allows it to switch back to on-board graphics to save on battery power when it's not faced with demanding graphics tasks. It easily outperforms all other netbooks we've tested, clocking up a score of 2,849 in 3DMark06. But even with this capacity, you'll still need to reduce the detail in newer games to achieve a decent frame rate. In terms of netbook performance and graphics capability, the 1215N cleans up. Gaming aside, the main benefit of the Ion chip here is its hardware video decoding. To make use of this, the software you're using needs to be optimised for it. This leads to some issues here and there. For example, 720p BBC HD streams played via iPlayer still look a little jerky, while 720p and 1080p video played via the Ion-optimised Media Player Classic software plays back as smooth as silk. Battery life is a good deal shorter than most other netbooks. In our Battery Eater test, for instance, the 1215N lasted for three hours and 28 minutes. The dual-core Acer D255 kept running for four hours and 12 minutes, in comparison. To be fair, though, you're likely to achieve much longer battery life than this under real-world conditions. Conclusion While you certainly pay for the privilege of the Asus Eee PC 1215N's dual-core processor and discrete graphics, your extra outlay is handsomely rewarded with fine performance. It's the first netbook we've used that didn't make us feel like we were compromising on speed or quality of graphics. As such, it comes highly recommended. Edited by Emma Bayly

At a GlanceExpert's RatingProsUltraportable in size and screen real estateGood ergonomics and video playbackConsNot for gamingSlow benchmark performanceOur VerdictIf you want the ultraportable form factor and can live without state-of-the-art performance, this laptop is a bargain. It’s an ultraportable, it’s a netbook, it’s an ultraportable, it’s a netbook… Judging by its size, screen real estate, and features, Asus’s Eee PC 1215B is an ultraportable. However, it’s priced at only $450 and sold as part of Asus’s netbook line. Alas, the performance of its AMD Fusion E-350 CPU just muddies the waters further; while significantly above average for a netbook, it falls well below the norm for ultraportable laptops. Whether considered as an underpowered ultraportable or a supersized netbook, the Eee PC 1215B is a well-designed, comfortable-to-use laptop. A thoughtful combination of matte and glossy blacks gives the unit a sedate but classy overall appearance. The status lights are out of the way on the front of the unit, and the power button, while directly underneath the display, is dim enough that it won’t intrude on your viewing experience. The keyboard is a tad on the soft and quiet side but still quite easy to type on. The touchpad offers excellent response as well, and its restrained silver trim makes it easy to locate on the keyboard deck, though the rocker button is a tad stiff. The 1215B’s 1366 by 768 display delivers a sharp image with a decent if not overly impressive amount of usable brightness. However, the backlight on our test unit bled badly on the upper left corner, to the point of distraction. Whether this is a one-off defect or a design flaw, we don’t know, but check yours out before you leave the store. The 1215B’s port array is considerably above average It includes, besides two USB ports, an always-on USB port, VGA and HDMI ports, an SC card slot, audio in and out, and a Kensington lock port. Connectivity is comprehensive, if not quite state of the art. Bluetooth is on board to accompany the Wi-Fi and ethernet; however, the Wi-Fi is single-band only, and the ethernet is 10/100, not gigabit. The specs on Asus’s site claim a/b/g/n wireless, but the hardware IDs in Device Manager showed that its Broadcom chip is the 4313, which supports only b/g/n. Asus has confirmed that versions of the 1215B are b/g/n only. As to the tweener performance The 1215B’s WorldBench score of 52 is well above the Atom-powered netbook norm, but far slower than that delivered by the Intel Core processors found in many ultraportables, and even slightly slower than the other Fusion E-350-powered units we’ve tested. Being slower than other E-350s is more likely due to the number of background applications and services, rather than to the healthy 2GB of memory or the capacious 320GB, 5400-rpm Seagate ST932032 hard drive. Note if you’re thinking of installing a solid-state drive, the 1215B is old-school in burying the hard drive within the body of the unit. The task of removing it is clearly daunting enough that I dropped the idea. The 1215B’s gaming frame rates are a huge tease. With midtwenties frames per second at medium detail on less-stressful games, it gives just enough performance to invoke wistful thoughts of what might have been. As it is, most modern games are unplayable. On the other hand, the Eee PC 1215B played every video stutter-free, even high-def 1080p, at high bit rates. By comparison, the Webcam is pixel-challenged, providing only 320 by 240 resolution. Software detritus sitting atop the 1215B’s Windows 7 Home Premium operating system includes the Bing toolbar and quite a few Asus utilities, although most are actually somewhat useful and not sucking up a lot or space or CPU cycles. Microsoft Office 2010 Starter is on board as well as Trend Micro’s Titanium antimalware software. Battery life on the Eee PC 1215B is hardly record-breaking, but decent enough given the chipset and performance hours is about enough to get you from coast to coast if you don’t tax the unit unduly. If you’re looking for the ultraportable form factor and ergonomics without the ultraportable cost, then the Asus Eee PC 1215B is a product you should consider. The performance is middling at best, but for everyday chores and video, it’s more than adequate.

Asus

In the Eee PC 1215T, Asus releases a new AMD netbook with a 12 inch display onto the market that allegedly bids more performance than its predecessor. We’ve rated this product considering that it is priced at 22,499, with DOS. If it was with Windows, in this price, it would’ve been a steal. Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test. While most netbooks such as the MSI U160 stick to a screen, Asus has plumped for a model on the Eee PC 1215N. It also comes with a native 1,366 x 768-pixel resolution, which means there's not only more room on your Windows desktop compared to the standard 1,024 x 600 resolution found on most 10-inch netbooks, but that it's also capable of displaying 720p HD as you'll find out in a moment, HD video is something this netbook is more than capable of handling expected, the display has a glossy coating. This enhances colours and makes movies and photos look vibrant, but it also attracts reflections like there's no tomorrow. If you'd prefer a non-glossy display, consider Samsung's course, a larger screen is always going to impact on chassis size, and with dimensions of 296 x 203 x 38mm, this netbook is ever-so-slightly harder to cram it into a small bag. Still, at it's impressively light, and won't weigh you down on your left side is home to the power socket, VGA-out, USB and an SD card reader. There's also an HDMI-out socket, enabling the Eee PC 1215N to be quickly connected to an HD television. On the right are a further two USB ports, along with a 10/100 Ethernet socket and audio in/ Wi-Fi and Bluetooth take care of the wireless, but there's no built-in 3G module, so if you're looking to access the internet while travelling you'll need to purchase a separate 3G quality of the keyboard can make or break a netbook, and the one on the Eee PC 1215N is something of a mixed bag. We loved the chiclet design and the feedback from each individual key was spot on. However, it also has a worrying amount of flex; this is never nice to see, especially so when you're paying for a premium touchpad looks good and has two slim chrome-effect bars marking its left and right edges, but it has the same smooth, slippery texture as the wrist rest, which makes it a little uncomfortable to use. We also found the left and right buttons, which take the form of a single bar, to be a little on the stiff has been slightly stingy with the hard drive, installing just a 250GB model. Unless you're looking to amass a large movie collection, it should suffice, but we expected at least 320GB at this Eee PC 1215N comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. Most Popular
